Helpful Information
GPM = Gallons per minute at point of chlorine injection
RESIDUAL = amount of chlorine remaining after contact with water and its impurities. A residual of .2 -.6 PPM should remain after chlorination at point of use.
CONTACT TIME - the time required for chlorine contact to perform disinfection.
APPLIED CHLORINE DOSAGE = desired chlorine feed rate for water conditions. See chart below.
Water Temperature 50 Degrees F Water Temperature 32 to 40 Degrees F

Metering Pump Selection
Select metering pump by taking total gallons or liters used per day (meaning 24 hours of well pump run time), and selecting a metering pump that most closely matches this requirement. For instance, if 2.4 gallons of chloirne are needed per day, select a 10 gallon per day pump. Then set the pump at 24% of rated pump by adjusting the speed and/or stroke settings on the pump.
Impurities Affecting Chlorine Demand
IRON: Apply 1 ppm chlorine for each 1.0 ppm iron
MANGANESE: Apply 1.7 to 2.0 ppm chlorine for each 1 ppm manganese.
HYDROGEN SULFIDE: Apply 2.0 ppm chlorine for each 1 ppm hydrogen sulfide.
OTHER factors that can affect chlorine demand: color, sediment, turbidity, oil to name a few.
Variable Flow Rates
Note: if the water stream into which the chlorine is being injected varies, determine the maximum flow rate, and use a proportionally fed chlorination system.
Chlorine Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
Household bleach = 5 1/4% 52,500 PPM
Pool chlorine = 12% or 120,000 PPM
Pool chlorine dilutions:
Diluted 1 part chlorine to 9 parts water: 12,000
Diluted 1 part chlorine to 18 parts water: 6,000
Note: use soft or purified water when diluting chlorine bleach.
